The play “Disco Pigs” was directed by Marija Mladenović, who was assistant director.

The provocative and radical piece “Disco Pigs” by the Irish author Enda Walsh clearly and openly problematizes the topics of social violence, sexuality, teenage rebellion and violence, poverty, crises and illusions of the Western family and the city, as well as the culture of Generation X. “Disco Pigs” is one of the fundamental texts that impacted the formation of one international style in theater in the second half of the nineties of the last century – neo-brutalism.

The relationship of two teenagers during their emotional and sexual development

The play follows the relationship of two teenagers born on the same day, who know each other since birth. The problem arises when they are faced with new, until then unknown emotions, which they develop towards each other during their emotional and sexual development. Although at first glance they are presented as villains, they are only victims of the system, a product of a society they did not know how to deal with.

The two main characters ask themselves many questions about love, sexuality and life. Viewers either hate or love Pig and Runt, some understand and sympathize with them, and others condemn them, but it is certain that everyone can find a part of their own upbringing and experience in this play.

Cillian Murphy rose to fame after his role in this play

The play was first premiered in Ireland in 1996, in which the role of Pig was played by the then-unknown actor Cillian Murphy, today best known for his role in the famous TV series “Peaky Blinders”. The play was a huge success and launched both Murphy (as an actor) and Walsh (as an author and director) into the very top of contemporary European drama. Murphy is a big star of the small screen today.

Come to the Bitef Theater on Tuesday, January 31 at 8 p.m. and enjoy the now iconic piece of the world theater stage performed by the graduate students of Acting from FCA.
