IN MEMORIAM: VLADIMIR VELIČKOVIĆ (1935–2019)

/ / News / 29. 08. 2019.

Vladimir Veličković, professor at the Faculty of Contemporary Arts and one of the most eminent painters in this region, passed away last night in Split at the age of 85.

Vladimir Veličković has been working at the Faculty of Contemporary Arts since 2006. As one of the most prominent professors, he mentored numerous generations of successful students, including five doctoral candidates.

Born in Belgrade, he was a representative of the new (modern) figuration. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture in Belgrade, and since 1985, he has been a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.

He was awarded the highest French recognition in the field of culture and art – “Commandeur dans l’ordre des Arts et des Lettres” – and was elected as a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts in the painting department. From 1983 to 2000, he taught at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and in 2007, he was awarded the French Order of Knight of the Legion of Honour.

He had his first exhibition at the age of 16 when he applied for a contest at the “Cvijeta Zuzorić” Pavilion. Since the contest was intended for young established painters, Vladimir had to conceal his age, but despite being younger, he achieved remarkable results and received numerous accolades.

His love for painting took him to Paris, where in 1983, he was appointed as a professor at the National School of Fine Arts (École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts). During his stay in France, he received the highest awards in the field of culture and art, and during that period, he also became a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. In addition, he was admitted to the French Academy of Fine Arts (which has a two-century history), where he ranked among the 10 academics of this department at position number 7.

To assist young artists in Serbia, he founded the “Vladimir Veličković Foundation” for Drawing, which awards prizes to the best young artists in the field of visual arts. At the peak of his career, Vladimir Veličković’s paintings were sold for up to EUR 50,000.
