Sound Sculpture Exhibition Ivan Bon “Touch of Sound” in Ljubljana

The sound sculpture exhibition titled “Touch of Sound” was held from November 17 to December 1. 2025, at the gallery of the “Library for the Blind” in Ljubljana. The exhibition was primarily intended for blind and partially sighted visitors, with the aim of expanding the artistic experience beyond the visual domain and enabling direct perception through touch and hearing. This body of work represents a continuation of research into the relationship between the auditory and the visual, with an emphasis on their mutual transposition and assimilation within a unified object based experience.

Twelve sculptures were created using a variety of materials: bronze, rubber, 3D print, stone, polyester resin, metal, and wood. Each sculpture contains its own sonic interior, with a speaker embedded into the structure of each object and connected to an amplifier that emits sound composed specifically for that sculpture. Electronically modified synthetic tones and programmed frequencies are not conceived as background sound, but as an integral part of the sculptural form its inner “voice” and resonant code. The works were conceived and realized as diptychs, as the sound compositions were created separately for each pair of sculptures and are emitted from the amplifiers divided into left and right channels. In this way, the entire exhibition consists of six pairs of sound sculptures that function as interconnected wholes in a dialogue of sound, form, and space. Their sonic duration, dynamics, and intensity create an acoustic landscape that is experienced not only aurally and tactilely, but also corporeally. In the process of conceptualizing the works. Ivan Bon paid special attention to the tactile reading of form: shape, texture, and material temperature were designed to be explored through touch. Touch does not merely serve to identify volume, but activates an additional layer of perception, expanding the experience of the heard sound through the physical presence of the material.

Before sending the works to Ljubljana, Ivan asked Boris Dončić, a person blind from birth and a participant in my workshop, to test the sculptures both tactually and sonically and to confirm that they were completely safe for handling, in order to avoid any potential injuries to visitors. His feedback was invaluable in the final preparation of the works. Several dozen visitors attended the opening. Based on visitor reactions and comments, it is concluded that the exhibition made a strong and positive impression, which represents the greatest confirmation of the success of this project.
